Winter Break and Building Hours

Please note that Cedar Lane will be closed from December 18, 2023 thru January 1, 2024.  School will resume on Tuesday January 2, 2024.  It will be a Gold Day.

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

PTSA Fund Raiser

GovDelivery3 days 13 hours ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Friends of Cedar Lane,

Most schools ask families to participate in various fundraisers in order to obtain the funds they desperately need to help the PTSA to achieve their goals to support students and faculty.  NOT CEDAR LANE!  Instead- we would like to introduce our No Fuss Fundraiser! And the good news is you can donate through PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/supportCLPTSA or through Venmo @Cedar-Lane. Checks are also welcome and can be made out to Cedar Lane PTSA and mailed to the school at 101 Cedar Lane SW, Vienna VA 22180

Your donation helps fund: senior scholarships, field trips, academic equipment, updated technology and so much more! And the best part- we won’t: try to sell you candles, giftwrap or popcorn, make you run or attend a gala!

No Fuss Fundraiser Options

$15 I do not want to buy any more candles, so here is the money I would have spent on them.

$25 I do not want to bother friends, family and co-workers, so here is the money I would have spent buying wrapping paper.

$50 I do not want to walk, swim or run in any activity that has the word “thon” in it.  Here is the money I would have spent on a “free” t-shirt.

$75 I do not want to attend any fancy balls or galas, so here is the money I would have spent on a new outfit.

AMOUNT OF YOUR CHOOSING- I am making this donation to express my appreciation for having nothing to buy or sell.

Thanks for your support!

Thanksgiving Break

GovDelivery2 weeks 3 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Cedar Lane Community:

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and I would like to wish all of you a wonderful break.  To that end, I have communicated to the Cedar Lane faculty the need to give our students (and themselves) a respite from the daily grind of schoolwork during the Thanksgiving holiday.  While teachers may have long-term assignments that span over the course of a break, I have shared with the faculty to not assign homework, projects, essays, etc. to be specifically done over the break.

This Thanksgiving all of us need the opportunity to spend time with our families and friends. We want our students to have the opportunity to catch a breath from schoolwork and to enjoy time with friends and family. We also want our teachers to decompress and put their lesson plan books and laptops away for a few days to enjoy time with their friends and family. Our goal is to have students and teachers return to school anxiety-free without the pressure of looming deadlines. This is a unified message that Madison pyramid principals send out three times during the year:  Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break.  Again, I wish you a happy and restful Thanksgiving holiday.

Alcohol & The Holidays

Holidays may involve family time, games, movies, food, and possibly drinks. Although loneliness is a cause for alcohol or drug consumption, being around others does not necessarily mean a decrease in unhealthy habits. Alcohol consumption increased during the pandemic and has not decreased after we have returned to a semblance of normalcy. Many people are still trying to figure out how to navigate our “new normal”. We encourage the consideration of a few things as we move towards the end of the year, have time off, and look forward to social interactions.

Questions to consider when drinking with your family:

  1. What message am I sending if I drink in excess around my underage child?
  2. Have I had conversations about responsible drinking with my child(ren)?
  3. Are the conversations I have about alcohol consumption realistic?
  4. Are the conversations I have with others reinforcing alcohol use as a coping skill during stressful times?
  5. What messages am I sending my underage child(ren) if I allow them to drink with me or another adult in the house?

Information to consider:

“One-third of Fairfax County students (33.7%) reported drinking alcohol at least once in their lifetime, ranging from 18.8% of eighth-grade students to half of twelfth-grade students (49.4%). One in seven students (15.2%) reported drinking alcohol in the past month, ranging from 4.5% of eighth-grade students to 27.7% of twelfth-grade students.” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020)

“Female students reported higher rates of alcohol use in their lifetime (36.1% compared to 31.2% of male students), in the past month (17.1% and 13.1%, respectively), and binge drinking in the past two weeks (7.3% and 6.5%, respectively)” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020).

Drug seminar for 11th and 12th graders

GovDelivery3 weeks 4 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

As part of the ongoing efforts to prevent opioid/fentanyl overdoses, division leadership and the School Board have decided that drug education lessons will be provided to students in grades 11 and 12.  The new lessons will replace the grade 11 lesson that has been instructed by SAPS (Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists) and the self-directed grade 12 lesson that has been done through government classes.

On Tuesday, 11/14/2023, Mr. Johnson (SAPS) and Mr. Carroll, will deliver the lessons to our 11th and 12th graders.  The presentation will take place in the cafeteria.

11th graders – 8:30 – 9:30

12th graders – 10:00 – 10:45

Should the presentations get done prior to the allotted times, students will return to their classes.

Conversing with Teens about Substance Use

Within this society’s culture sometimes we avoid talking about topics that make us uncomfortable but can be both lifesaving and changing, such as finances and drugs. Are there things that would have really made a difference in some of your experiences if known when younger, that can be shared with your teenager now? Here’s a few tips for talking about substance use and misuse with your teenager.

Avoid:

  • Overgeneralizations/horror stories

Ex: “People who use drugs go to jail and end up homeless.” -That is not true for most people.

  • Sharing about how you used to do drugs

Ex: “I smoked in high school, so I understand wanting to experiment.” - The THC content in marijuana is much higher than when you may have used.

  • Having loose boundaries

Ex: “It’s okay if you do it at home, but not anywhere else.” -This creates a gray area and demonstrates an acceptance for not following rules and established boundaries.

Tips:

  • Have a united front or if alone be consistent.

Both parents need to communicate the same message. No good cop, bad cop.

  • Recognize addiction in your family.

Speak the unspoken. Share information that could help your teen make an informed decision about “playing with fire” since they’re genetically predisposed.

  • Set a desired outcome for the conversation.

What do you want your teen to understand before you start the conversation?

  • Focus on their health as important and a concern versus behavior.

Avoid finger pointing literally and figuratively.

  • Set firm expectations & boundaries

Clearly explain what is and isn’t acceptable for your household and the associated consequences.

  • Keep a “cool head”
  • Withhold judgment
  •   Be direct
  •   Be prepared for your teen’s reaction.

Reminder: Student Food Deliveries

Cedar Lane does not allow food delivery during the school day. Please reinforce with your child that ordering from a delivery service during school is not allowed.  Students will often have a delivery driver come to an entrance other than Door 1, which compromises the safety of the entire school. Our staff does not have the capacity to manage food deliveries and will not open the doors for Uber Eats, GrubHub, DoorDash or any other service. Students should not be leaving the building to meet anyone for deliveries.

If your child forgets their lunch, parents or guardians can bring lunch and drop it off in the main office for your child to pick up. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to load at least a few dollars on your child’s lunch account for situations where they have forgotten lunch.

Calendar Update for March 5 Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as it does on other professional work days.

How to Prevent Substance Misuse

It’s true, teens are more likely to listen to peers rather than their parents, it is part of this stage in development. When a baby is born, the brain’s sole responsibility is focused on keeping them alive. As they grow into adolescence, finding their tribe becomes important. Think about your top three happiest memories up to this point in life. What were you doing? How did you feel? Who was there? Each of these memories was likely a shared experience with others. Likely you were laughing and smiling with loved ones, maybe food was involved. Now shift to think about your three worst memories. What was going on? How did you feel? Who was there? In each of these memories, you likely were alone or felt alone.

Substance use becomes a problem for some because they either are or feel alone. Connection is an important aspect in our everyday lives. Fairfax County’s “Three to Succeed” describes protective factors to help youth achieve their higher selves. If a child has at least three of these protective factors, they are more likely to succeed in life. They include: having high personal integrity, trusted adults to talk to, performing community service, participating in extracurricular activities, teacher recognition of effort and good work, and parents availability for help. What is noticed is that five of the six protective factors involve connection with someone else, and the first protective factor describes connection with self.

Families of students participating in PSAT Testing on 10/11: This is the first time the PSAT is being administered online. We will be providing students with laptops to take the assessment on 10/11. However, students will need to complete a brief digital readiness check in order to be eligible to take the assessment on Wednesday. On Tuesday 10/10, we will be calling students down to complete this readiness check- attendance on Tuesday 10/10 is very important to this process and will help to ensure a smooth PSAT testing experience.

Families of students participating in SAT Testing on 10/11: This is the last time the SAT will be offered in paper/pencil format. Moving forward, SAT tests will be administered online.

For ALL Test Takers:

  • Please make sure to get a good nights sleep the night before.
  • Please make sure to eat breakfast before arriving to school, or immediately upon arriving to school.
  • Wear comfortable clothing- layers work well in case the room feels too hot or cold to you.
  • Electronic Devices of any kind, including ear pods, apple watches, cell phones, gaming devices, and personal laptops are strictly prohibited for the duration of testing. This includes during breaks and bathroom breaks. Violations of this policy will result in filing an irregularity with the College Board.

College Fair and Postsecondary Virtual Events

Alcohol & Football

As the cooler weather comes in, the leaves begin to change, we exchange our sandals for boots and Pumpkin flavored favorites, and football becomes the topic of many conversations. Families gather one or more times a week, wearing sport paraphernalia to root for “their team”, often enjoying an alcoholic beverage. Adults may have these interactions in the safety and confines of their own home, at a friend's house, or in a noisy establishment with televisions and a bar. When this routine becomes a habit seen by teens regularly, they may begin to associate alcohol with football. So, when they attend their school’s football game, it’s now their night out with friends, and the close association between football and alcohol has already been established for them.

Media ads from various companies showcase their ice-cold brew options with stereotypical attractive people at a bar, appearing cool. When adults attend in-person games, tailgating seems mandatory as part of the full experience. When teens meet up before attending football games, pre-game drinking may be something they consider.

Alcohol.org states that people who watch games at viewing parties, average consumption of 7 drinks and those who tailgated averaged 8 drinks. In a country that values football and has connected football to the consumption of alcohol, it’s easy to see how teens may be conditioned to do the same. If a student is old enough to attend football games, they’re old enough to have conversations about alcohol safety.

Here are some tips to help:

  1. Establish clear and consistent boundaries “I will not tolerate…”.
  2. Explain why adults have the privilege to drink and adolescents are not allowed to drink.
  3. Do not exaggerate.
  4. Set a desired outcome for the conversation: Think about what you want your teen to understand before you get into the conversation.

What is RTL?

RTL stands for Return To Learn.  On a rotating basis, based on Black Days, all students will return to a particular class period for remediation, intervention and work completion.  When the calendar refers to RTL 2, that means during the 4th period (Panther Time) all students will return to 2nd period.

What is SEL?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an FCPS standard (driven by VDOE) to help students beyond school life and prepare them for “the real world”.  All FCPS schools participate in SEL.  Cedar Lane has been teaching SEL for years now, as our students benefit from its lessons very well.  SEL at Cedar happens on specific Mondays, and is tied into our RTL schedule.  For more information on the SEL in FCPS, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/social-and-emotional-learning-sel.
