  • Turn it on
  • Log into the laptop/FCPS Network
  • Log into Google Apps (check Google email and Google Classroom
  • Make sure you see the CL School Google Classroom site (class code: 7swhetc to join)

Current News

Dear Madison Pyramid Parents and Community,

We reach out to you today as a united group of educators to acknowledge the events that have transpired portraying the anger and hurt that exists in our country.  Racism and hate have no place in the Madison Pyramid; rather our schools are places that strive towards inclusiveness and compassion for all while providing hope for the future. To our Black and African American families and community members, we echo the words of our Superintendent, Dr. Brabrand as he shared with FCPS staff today, “We see you, we believe in you, and we stand with you.”

At each of our schools, we have made a commitment to bring awareness to social and emotional issues within our buildings through an equity lens. Every school in the Madison pyramid has an equity lead who partners with the Principal to ensure staff have the tools to recognize and take action on inequities within our buildings. We have participated in professional learning on equitable and culturally responsive practices and are committed to furthering our learning in order to address the topics of racism and equity with our students and with each other.

During this time, we will not sit silently. We have all worked together to create places and spaces where all are welcome and seen. In our classrooms, and within our school communities, we will continue to learn about, value, and embrace each other’s differences while working to change the conditions that allow injustice. Please know that your schools are here for you and stand with our Black and African American community. It is the diversity of our community members who make the Madison pyramid a wonderfully unique place to live, work, learn and grow.  We recognize that everyone may be impacted by these recent events differently, and we welcome you to reach out to your school’s Principal, school counselor, or clinical staff with any questions or concerns.

For additional resources, please consider the following:

As a community, we are here, and we stand together.

Sincerely,

Your Madison Pyramid Principals

Senior Update

GovDelivery 2 months 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Class of 2020 Parents/Guardians:

We are pleased to write with information about the production of our Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video.  Our current streaming date for the pre-recorded Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video is Friday, July 3, 2020, at 6:00 pm.  More details will follow on how to stream and watch the video.  The Virtual Graduation Ceremony also will be broadcast on FCPS Channels 21, 25, and 99 at a date and time to be determined.

The purpose of this video is to celebrate our seniors, acknowledge their achievement of earning their high school diploma, and create a keepsake memory for them.  The format of this video will be a hybrid between a traditional graduation ceremony and a celebration of our seniors’ accomplishments.  We hope to include some of our graduation traditions and speeches, as well as highlights of what makes our school and Class 2020 special.  Although the video does not replace an in-person graduation, we are excited about this opportunity to honor our seniors as safely as possible.

Your senior will receive communication from Herff Jones and partners Marching Orders and Stage Clips in addition to Cedar Lane in his or her Naviance and fcpsschools.net account.  The emails will detail both how to upload the student’s photo (preferably in cap and gown) and the text that will be shown when the student’s name is announced.  For uniformity, the photo should be a portrait-style image of the face, head and shoulders with a solid background and must be compatible with the K-12 educational environment and good citizenship.  The photograph and text must be submitted by Friday, June 12, 2020

To participate, your student must reply that he or she wishes to do so. If your student confirms that he or she wants to participate, but does not provide a photo, then the school will upload his or her senior yearbook photo for use during the ceremony.  If your student does not want to participate, please email Ms. Dougherty at DDougherty1@fcps.edu, by Monday, June 8, 2020.

Please review the email with your senior to ensure that the necessary timelines are strictly met.

Your student may also choose to upload an optional individual student video clip. This 10-15 second clip will not be included in the virtual graduation and celebration video.  Instead, the optional video clip will be made available only to the individual student through a unique URL that will be sent by the vendor’s email to such student.  Each such student may download his or her individual clip to personal social media and digital platforms, if the student wishes.

All student submissions (including name, photo, and student biographical information for official, school-sponsored activities and awards, and other student message) must be consistent with the K-12 educational environment and with good citizenship and will be subject to review by school officials.

After the streaming of the Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video, students and parents will be given directions on how to download the video as a personal keepsake.

A hard copy of this letter as well as a letter to you student the same timeline information will be mailed on to you as well.

The goal for our school is to have participation by all seniors who wish to do so in accordance with the above information.  We want to ensure that every such student is represented and be able to provide every such student with a lasting memory and keepsake that can be revisited for years to come. We look forward to celebrating our seniors as a school community, and we are excited about having your senior participate in this celebration.

Sincerely,

Attention parents of seniors for 2020

GovDelivery 2 months 2 weeks ago

Parents of Seniors

Thursday, May 21, 2020, marked the last day of classes for Cedar Lane’s class of 2020.  While none of us wished for your students to end their High School career sitting in front of a laptop in their living room, I must say how proud we are of them for their resiliency and dedication.

Per Dr. Brabrand’s letter to FCPS Seniors dated May 12, 2020, the school system is looking at several options for Senior Celebrations:

  • Individual Graduate Photo Opportunities
  • Virtual Celebration Video
  • Face-to-Face Ceremony in the Fall of 2020

The Individual Photo Opportunity will take place in the last two weeks of June at Cedar Lane, following safety criteria set forth by the Fairfax County Health Department.  This event will occur outside the building where seniors and families could exit their vehicle for a quick photograph in front of a Cedar Lane backdrop.  You will receive scheduling information at a later date.  We are scheduled to receive the caps and gowns the first week of June.  We will reach out to you at that time to come to the building to pick them up.  The charge for the caps and gown is $30.  A more detailed letter regarding the individual photo-op will be sent out next week.

FCPS has contracted with a vendor to produce a Virtual Celebration Video for all FCPS High Schools.  The video will contain speeches, messages from staff, and each senior will be recognized by name and photo.  Cedar’s video celebration is scheduled to be aired on July 3, 2020 at 6:00 PM.  Letters to both the graduates and their parents with additional details will be mailed next week.

Grades

Per direction of the VDOE, no grades will be given for students’ 4th quarter work.  Teachers will enter NM (No Mark) for 4th quarter in their gradebook.  Teachers enter feedback of Proficient, Attempted, or Not Attempted in SIS as feedback for individual 4th quarter assignments.  Proficient being defined as 75% accuracy/correct on any given assignment.  Students can earn a “bump” of one grade distribution (C to C+) towards their final grade by the following:  Feedback of Proficient on 4/5 assignments with zero Not Attempted assignments.

A student’s final grade in a Year-Long class will be the highest of the following:

  • Avg of Qtrs. 1, 2, & 3
  • Avg of Qtrs. 1, 2, & 3 with 1 grade distribution increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • 1st Semester Grade
  • 1st Semester Grade with 1 grade distribution increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • Quality Points as per FCPS Grading and Reporting

A student’s final grade in a SEMESTER 2 class will be the higher of the following:

  • 3rd Grade
  • 3rd Grade with up to 2 grade distributions increase earned during distance learning (if applicable)
  • Semester 2 classes are Algebra 1, Geom. Pt. 2, SOL Math Remediation, and any electives the student entered after S1 ended.

Please contact me at tplundy@fcps.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Message from Mr Lundy

GovDelivery 3 months 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Cedar Lane School Community,

We heard positive feedback from teachers that many students were able to successfully log into Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and connect with their classroom teachers yesterday.  By Tuesday April 28, 2020, all classrooms should be back and up and running!

Below are some important updates regarding grading:

Third Quarter

Third quarter has been extended to Friday, May 1,, 2020.  Teachers may continue to work with students to close out the third quarter and accept assignments through that date.

Access in ParentVUE and StudentVUE to view the report card module will be closed from Friday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. until Saturday, May 9 at 6:00 a.m.

Fourth Quarter

Fourth Quarter Timeline:  While third quarter work is being accepted until May 1st, fourth quarter work has been assigned to students.  Any new work will be entered in fourth quarter gradebooks beginning Monday, May 4th.

Providing Feedback to Students/Parents and Monitoring Progress: Teachers should provide feedback such as comments on quality of work and guidance for improvement.

  • Assignment “marks” will be entered in the gradebook and will be: Proficient, Attempted, Not Attempted
  • This data will be considered to positively influence the final course grade
  • Students and families will be able to see “marks” in SIS, though weekly emails will not be sent since there will not be a quarter 4 grade

Calculating Final Grades

Final Exams: There will be no final exam and/or culminating activity included as part of the final course grade calculation this year.

Year-Long Courses - Calculating Final Grade

  • Teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by one grade distribution (B to B+), based on demonstrated proficiency of quarter 4 learning.
  • A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
    • Average of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3
    • Average of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3 w/1 grade distribution increase consideration
    • 1st Semester Grade
    • 1st Semester Grade w/1 grade distribution increase consideration

Current Semester Courses - Calculating Final Grade

  • Schools/teachers have the discretion of raising a student's final grade by two grade distributions (B to A-), based on demonstrated proficiency of Qtr 4 learning.
  • A student’s final grade will be the highest of the following:
    • Quarter 3 Average
    • Quarter 3 Average (w/up to a two-grade distribution increase consideration)

Report Cards

Report Cards/Progress Reports: Report Cards/Progress Reports will be mailed centrally for both third and fourth quarters.

Parents/Guardians may opt into “Go Paperless” for report cards by following the below instructions:

  • Parents/Guardians can take advantage of the paperless option, by logging into ParentVUE, then going to “My Account” and selecting "Go Paperless!". This is the only way to keep a paper report card from being generated for students at the secondary level. All parents who share the same address as the student must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option. This option must be selected prior to May 12th to prevent the 3rd quarter report card from being mailed.

Last Day of School

The last day of school for all students (except seniors) is Friday, June 12, 2020. Seniors’ last day of school is May 22, 2020.

Summer Courses

Additional summer offerings and support through FCPS summer learning programming are being discussed and will be shared as soon as available pending developments with the state-wide closure of schools.

Regards,

Thomas P Lundy

Dear Cedar Lane Community:

Despite attempts to address identified technology issues over the weekend, yesterday it became evident that Blackboard Learn 24x7 was not able to handle the system load of our virtual class meetings.  Last night, Dr. Brabrand emailed the community with his comprehensive plan on addressing the problems that have arisen with the current distance learning format.  His full communication can be found here - https://www.fcps.edu/news-features-and-events/coronavirus-update/coronavirus-update-superintendents-messages-community

To ensure students have access to continuity of learning, students will resume asynchronous assignments today.  Students should check their fcpsschools.net email and/or log into Google Classroom, if applicable, and look for messages, videos, and assignments from their 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th period teachers.  Staff will be available to answer questions via email for students needing further guidance.

We will provide you with an update soon regarding our next steps as we shift our distance learning plan.  Please know that our teachers and staff have been working and adapting with every change to best teach our students in this new environment.  As new plans are identified, the staff will continue to create assignments to engage students in meaningful learning activities.

Sincerely,

Confidentiality Notice for On Line Learning

GovDelivery 3 months 2 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear FCPS Parent or Guardian,
In order to best meet the needs of our students with disabilities during this school closure, our special education teachers and related service providers are using Blackboard Collaborate and/or Google Meet as online platforms to offer instruction and support.

As we transition to a Distance Learning Model, many of our special education teachers and related service providers will be using these online platforms to:
• Facilitate the creation of classes,
• Organize information for students, and
• Implement small group and/or individual learning sessions.

Although FCPS staff will be utilizing best practices to maintain confidentiality during online sessions, please note that when a student participates in a Blackboard Collaborate or Google Meet virtual session, their first and last name may be visible to all attendees in that session.

By allowing your child to join a virtual group, you acknowledge that your child’s name (first and last) may be visible to other student participants. With live video feed, FCPS staff are also unable to control who else may be in the room when a student is participating in a virtual environment.

If you are not comfortable with your child participating in a Blackboard Collaborate or Google Meet session, please reach out to your child’s special education case manager or related service provider to review other options of program delivery.

Fairfax County Public Schools expects that all families review and implement the following guidelines and expectations to ensure that the confidentiality rights of all students are protected when live video sessions are used.
1. Parent or Guardian shall make every effort to ensure that no one other than the student scheduled to participate can see or hear the live virtual session.
2. No recordings will be made by the parent, guardian, or student of virtual live sessions.
3. If parental or other third-party involvement in a virtual live session is necessary to enable a student to participate, the individual assisting the student shall not re-disclose any personally identifiable information about any student participating.
4. When participating in a group session, please be mindful of the educational environment and eliminate distractions that may divert the students’ attention away from learning.

Dear Cedar Lane Community:

Friday evening, you and your family received a message from FCPS sharing the following information:

  • Blackboard was temporarily shut down for upgrades
  • FCPS is hopeful that Blackboard will be up and operating to accommodate all students by Monday
  • The goal is to have all of our students following their virtual schedule on Tuesday, April 21
  • If it becomes clear that the upgrades did not fix the problem on Monday, teachers will be ready to teach your students asynchronously - meaning students will be able to access lessons through Google Classroom or some other means for the week while additional adjustments are made.
  • Lastly, students should make their default browser Chrome
    • Here is a video on how to do that.
    • Launch Chrome.
    •  Paste the following into the URL windowchrome://settings/defaultBrowser.
    • Click Make Default.
    •  If prompted to choose an app, click Google Chrome and close the window.

Our teachers at Cedar Lane School are ready to engage with your students and teach them all in a virtual environment.  Teachers have been working hard to finish up third quarter work and start new lessons for the 4th quarter.  We are ready, and we remain hopeful that we will see your child virtually on Tuesday.

I will update you on Monday should an alternative plan be needed.
