FCPS Laptop Collection

Cedar Lane is required to collect EACH student’s FCPS-assigned laptop and charger by the end of this school year.  For those students returning to Cedar Lane in the fall, they will be assigned a reimaged FCPS laptop when school begins.

  • Students must turn in their school-issued laptop and charger.
  • All underclassman will turn in their laptops and chargers during the 5th period exam on Wednesday, June 8th.
  • We are not collecting the laptop bags.
  • Students who have lost their laptop or charger will need to pay the replacement charge.  Students or parents need to inform Cedar Lane that the laptop has been lost.  A charge is then posted to MySchoolBucks with the laptop or charger replacement fee.  Parents then make their payments through MySchoolBucks. Students should bring a paper receipt from MySchoolBucks with them when they come to the laptop collection.
  • The laptop replacement fee is $481 and the charger replacement fee is $23.
  • Students attending ESY or other FCPS Summer Program should still turn in their laptops and will be issued a reimaged machine when their Summer Program begins.
  • Students may turn in their laptop and charger earlier than Wednesday, June 8 by bringing it to the technology office, the main office or their 5th period teacher.

FCPS Summer Program

Here is FCPS summer program registration information including high school credit recovery courses, SOL/WorkKeys remediation, and other programs. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning I have also been (and will continue) calling/e-mailing individual parents and students about summer options if a student has been failing a core course or SOL this year.

Most summer programs fall under FCPS Adult & Community Education, so first the parent will create a free account on ACE. Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge is needed for registration: https://aceclasses.fcps.edu/Login.aspx

The face-to-face courses (Credit Recovery Academy) are for repeat credit only. Students are eligible to enroll in a Credit Recovery Academy course if they have previously received a grade of F or NM.

 https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning/summer-learning-credit-recovery-academy

There are also SOL & WorkKeys test remediation classes for various subjects during these sessions if the student still needs one for a verified credit. This is an excellent opportunity to make up a credit in only THREE WEEKS! There is no tuition. The parent will register on ACE and enter the requested classes, and then the request will come to me from the system for my approval. Please take note of registration deadlines.

Class Dates: July 11-July 29

Registration Dates: Monday, April 25 - Monday, June 27

Students attend a Credit Recovery Academy located in their region:

Region 1: Herndon High School

Region 2: Marshall High School

Region 3: Edison High School

Region 4: South County High School

Region 5: Woodson High School

Transportation is provided from “depots,” which usually refer to nearby high schools. During course registration, a chart will pop up saying which base schools “feed” to a specific high school offering the summer classes, and the parent can choose the class location from there. The family has to provide the transportation to the depot.

Students can take Self-Directed Online Economics & Personal Finance (a credit required for graduation) as a new credit during the spring or summer: https://aceclasses.fcps.edu/AcademicCourseDetails.aspx?AreaID=11068&AreaName=&CourseID=ed386ab9-6d64-4f8d-b3ef-d70aa7c006e3&ProgramID=443&ProgCatgName=High+School+-+EPF&CategoryID=10481&Term=202203&IsCourse=1 This course runs June 28 - July 30, completely online - 14 modules consisting of 140 small units that student goes through at his/her own pace. There are a total of 140 Exit Tickets, 14 module tests, and final exam that all need to be done by the last day. The course is taken for Pass/Fail only.

Also of note is a new CTE (Career/Technical Educ.) work-based learning internship in which students can earn one credit for working 280 hours and completing assignments related to the work. It runs June 1 – July 28, and students must register by June 1. Students must have already completed a CTE course to be eligible.

On the Summer Learning page, you will see information about other summer programs. CTE Summer Academy and Institute for the Arts are enrichment programs that allow students to choose, from an extensive list, which modules they would be most interested in. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning

Please let me know if you have any questions or need help. As mentioned, I will also be contacting parents of failing courses or SOLs directly to advise them on options for summer credit recovery.  Karen Williams, Cedar Lane School Counselor [email protected]

Please help us thank our hardworking staff

On Tuesday, May 3rd, as part of Staff Appreciation Week, the PTSA will be hosting a luncheon for staff. We are looking for parents to send in desserts for the luncheon and would appreciate all donations!  They can be dropped off in the Main Office on Monday anytime or on Tuesday before 10:30am- or sent in with students!!!

In addition, we are seeking donations of gift cards and while we are grateful to the families that already donated, unfortunately, we do not yet have enough gift cards to give one to every staff member! We want to make sure that we show our staff just how much we appreciate all of their hard work! Help Needed with Basketball Uniforms

As you may have heard, Mr. Jackson, our Basketball Coach is looking to purchase new uniforms for the Basketball team!

They have not had new uniforms since 2003 and the ones that have survived are in sad shape. Our basketball team is an important activity at the school! It can really be a crucial motivator for some of our students and can really help students to feel connected to the school, other students and staff.  It can be a significant source of pride and self esteem boost many suffering from anxiety and depression so desperately need.

We have asked over 20 area PTSAs and Athletic Booster Clubs in our catchment area to help our PTSA fund this but also thought we would reach out to you in case you would be able to donate.

Cedar Lane Dance Team Forms

The first ever Cedar Lane Dance Team is here! This team is for any student who is looking for a safe, structured space to express themselves creatively through music. Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of PBIS level or music background. We are looking for dancers, DJ’s, and music makers! Meetings will be held after school on Mondays and during some 4th period return days. Ask Ms. Watkins or Ms. Bobe for a permission slip. Any snack, drink, or gift card donations would be very much appreciated!

Cedar Lane Beautification Day is Thursday, April 21

This annual event has our entire building turn out to place mulch, plant and clean the garden areas around Cedar Lane.  The students love to participate in this as not only do they get Civics hours, they also get immediate satisfaction with a job well done.  We are in need of donations of perennials, which return each year to bloom more.  Some examples include:  Eastern Red Columbine, Eastern Bluestar, Butterfly-weed, Spiderwort, Blue Wild Indigo, Woodland Phlox, Eastern Rose-mallow, Black-eyed Susan, White Turtlehead, and as always Azaleas.  Drop your donations off at the main office or send them in with your student.  Thanks for helping out!
