Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

 

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome 

  • Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Goal

  • All students enrolled at Cedar Lane for the full school year will take the Reading Inventory 1-3 times and show measurable growth in Reading. Individual student growth is defined as follows: Those testing on the: 1st-3rd grade reading level will improve by 75 points 4th-6th grade reading level will improve by 50 points 7th-8th grade reading level will improve by 25 points. On or above grade level will maintain or improve their performance.

Strategy 1

  • Assess student Literacy skills and use evidenced-based resources to provide skill-building across the curriculum.

Strategy 2 

  • Provide small group or 1:1 targeted intervention/tutoring for literacy as well as content acquisition across the curriculum, during school, or after school (after school can be in-person or virtual).

Strategy 3

  • Tier 3 ELA students as identified by SOL's, Reading Inventory results, historical data, will be enrolled in a Literacies class & have the opportunity for Credit Recovery utilizing Edmentum if they fail and English class.

 

 

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome

  • Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Goal

  • All students enrolled at Cedar Lane for the full school year will take the Math Inventory in the fall, winter and spring and show measurable growth. Individual student growth is defined as follows: Those testing on the: 1st-3rd grade math level will improve by 75 points 4th-6th grade math level will improve by 50 points 7th-8th grade math level will improve by 25 points On or above grade level - will maintain or improve their performance.

Strategy 1

  • Assess student Math skills and use evidenced-based resources to provide skill-building across the curriculum.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome

  • Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Goal

  • By May 31, 2023, all Cedar Lane Students will receive direct instruction and support through the Cedar Lane PBIS program, mentoring program and clinical groups to strengthen deficient CASEL competencies, reduce behavior referrals and increase attendance.

  • Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports

  • Schoolwide Mentoring Program

Strategy 3

  • Clinical groups and Personal Development classes for Tier 2,3 students (social skills development).

 

 

Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Outcome

  • Developing Portrait of a Graduate skills in our students will leverage success in school and in their post-secondary lives.

Goal

  • 100% of Cedar Lane students enrolled at the fall baseline assessment will demonstrate growth in knowledge and understanding of impact of POG attributes and skills. based on on pre and post-test data from a Student Survey.

Strategy 1

  • Content teams will incorporate POG attributes and skills into their lessons where they align with their curriculum.

Strategy 2 

  • All English classes will focus on learning the POG attributes and skills in their lessons with a focus on communication for the 22/23 school year, and how these skills and attributes can positively impact them for the remainder of their lives.
