October 26, 2020

Dear Parent,

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is planning to bring additional student groups back to school for in-person instruction in the near future. We will follow strict safety and health protocols to minimize health risks for students and staff. To learn more, visit here.

Cedar Lane students are scheduled to return on January 5, 2021 (tentative) for in-person instruction.

We will be using concurrent instruction for students who receive in-person instruction. This means that students who elect in-person instruction will receive two days of teacher-led instruction in the school building and two days of teacher-led instruction at home. Students who elect all-virtual learning will continue to receive four days of teacher-led instruction at home. In either format, Mondays will be a full day of independent learning for students to give our teachers more time to prepare and plan the week’s lessons.

Some schools are already piloting concurrent instruction. The Superintendent will report his findings on the pilot program at the November 12 School Board work session.  Here is a video that demonstrates how a concurrent classroom will look.

We will honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction. If you chose in-person instruction, we will assume your student(s) will return to in-person instruction in accordance with the schedule above. If you chose all-virtual instruction, we will assume you will continue in that format. If your circumstances have changed, please contact us no later than November 6, 2020 by filling out this Google form.  If you are changing your decision from virtual to in-person learning, we will try our best to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space. The Google form must be filled out by November 6, 2020, or your original choice from July will stand.

We will strive to minimize the impact of this transition; however, some students may experience a change in schedule or class assignment as we work to accommodate everyone’s preferences.  Additionally, due to health concerns, not every teacher will return to the building to teach in-person.  If returning to in-person learning, your student may be in a class with a teacher instructing virtually and a staff member monitoring the class.  Due to privacy issues, the school cannot disclose which teachers will be teaching virtually.

Parents, please use this form to indicate if your preference has changed since the original survey in July. If you are changing your preference, you must complete the form for each student you have enrolled in FCPS. If we do not receive a response from you, we will honor your original request as indicated in July 2020. If you are changing your status from virtual to in-person learning, we will do our best to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we continue on this journey to deliver the best instruction for all FCPS students.

Sincerely,

Thomas P Lundy

Queridos Padres,

Sinceramente,

Thomas P Lundy

On Thursday, October 29, Cedar Lane School eleventh graders will have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT. FCPS will cover the cost for any eleventh-grade student to take this test.

You should have received a call from a Cedar Lane staff member regarding the PSAT test, but to help the school prepare for testing, families are asked to complete the form below by Friday, October 9. This form asks about participation in the test, the need or bus transportation, and interest in free breakfast or lunch on the day of the test.  Please follow the link below to indicate whether your student will take the PSAT or not.    FCPS students in Grade 11 should use their @fcpsschools.net accounts to complete this form to indicate if they intend to take the PSAT/NMSQT on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Cedar Lane School: PSAT/NMSQT Intent to Participate Form

A translated version of the form content may be found on the PSAT/NMSQT Intent webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/42099). Due to health and safety protocols, FCPS sites cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the exam.

General information about the PSAT/NMSQT test format is available on the College Board webpage (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10). Thursday, October 29 has been designated for asynchronous learning in FCPS high schools, so students who choose to take the PSAT/NMSQT will not miss synchronous learning time with their teachers.

We will share more details about test day schedules and bus transportation in the coming weeks. FCPS health and safety protocols for PSAT/NMSQT administration are available online (https://www.fcps.edu/node/41891).

Dear Cedar Lane School Families,

A reminder that on September 1st, at 10:00 am, we will be conducting a virtual orientation at Cedar Lane. Our hope is for 100% participation in this event.  The students will meet with their Case Manager, who is their 4th period teacher.  It appears as Learning Seminar on their schedule.  The major focus will be to ensure that students are able to access their virtual classroom links, have their links organized so they know how to follow their schedule, and to ensure that their technology is working correctly.  The teachers have begun emailing their BBCU links to your student’s fcpsschools.net email account.  I’m attaching our Bell Schedule as well.  Please ensure your student is doing the following to ensure functional technology prior to September 1st:

  • Charge their laptop if not already charged (the laptop should be charged every night – it will prolong the life of the battery).
  • Turn the device on and let it boot up
  • Ensure it is connected to the internet at your location
  • Keep the device on for at least 30 minutes
  • The above procedures should be done at least once per week until school starts to ensure the laptop receives the latest updates
  • Log into the laptop/FCPS Network
  • Log into Google Apps (check Google email and Google Classroom)
  • Make sure you see the CL School Google Classroom site (class code: 7swhetc to join)
  • Log into Blackboard

If your student experiences any difficulties logging on successfully, please complete the Google Form found here and you will be contacted:

August 17, 2020

Dear Cedar Lane School Families,

I hope this letter finds you well as we enter the final few weeks of summer, and welcome to the 2020-21 school year at Cedar Lane School.  As we embrace beginning the school year virtually, I want you to know that the staff of Cedar Lane are committed to developing an instructional program that will meet your student’s academic and social/emotional needs.  We are looking forward to working with you and your student.

Cedar Lane School offers a combination of high-quality, engaging learning experiences; intensive support for emotional and/or behavioral needs; and a variety of initiatives and programs which will help to foster our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The foundation of our work is a belief in the importance of content, pedagogy, and relationships. I invite you to commit yourselves, in partnership with Cedar Lane School, to the support and dedication your student deserves. It is through this partnership that our students’ successes will be maximized.

This year, Fairfax County Public Schools have re-committed to focus on Keeping Equity at the Center of our work and ensuring that every student is seen, supported, and challenged! Educational Equity will continue to be an area of focus for us at Cedar Lane as well. We will continue our Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) through Panther Time with your student’s IEP case manager.

Our School Counselor, Ms. Williams, has spent a significant amount of time this summer developing two schedules. One schedule will be used while we are in an all-virtual setting and the second will be used once the school district pivots to in-person instruction. In both schedules we have included time for academic intervention and social-emotional learning. These practices have always been in place at Cedar Lane School, but due to the current environment, we will be laser-focused on these two areas.  The virtual bell schedule will be posted shortly on the website; https://cedarlaneschool.fcps.edu/, but it’s important to know that during virtual instruction our day begins at 8:10 am and ends at 2:55 pm. This start and end time will remain the same when we pivot to in-person instruction.  You will see that no synchronous learning takes place on Mondays.  There will be time dedicated to Teacher Office Hours/Interventions for students, and time dedicated to asynchronous assignments for students, and planning time for staff.

Attendance to synchronous learning (online classes Tuesday – Friday), and asynchronous learning (assignments to completed individually by students on Mondays), will be taken and reported to VDOE.  This was not the case in the spring when we took attendance but did not report it to the State.  It is imperative that your student login to their virtual classes and participate.  Logging into the session in and of itself will not meet VDOE guidelines.

On September 1st we will be conducting a virtual orientation at Cedar Lane. Our hope is for 100% participation in this event.  The students will meet with their Case Manager/Panther Time Teacher.  The major focus will be to ensure that students are able to access their virtual classroom links, have their links organized so they know how to follow their schedule, and to ensure that their technology is working correctly.  The teachers will begin emailing their BBCU links next week to your student’s fcpsschools.net email account.

If your student experiences any difficulties logging on successfully, please complete the Google Form found here and you will be contacted:

 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf71p5o_FQxd5YJSiL_gIbZIUWE5tQW37sRaqizswNKCJoHuA/viewform.

You will receive this letter and other useful information in a packet to be mailed later this week.  I want to draw your attention to several items that need to be returned, the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) and the Health Information form (SS/SE-71).  Both forms are essential for the school to provide medical care for the student and need to be filled out each year.  Both forms are available in fillable format on FCPS webpage at the following link:  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/parent-communication-overview/wecareschool.  Please complete the forms and scan and email them to our Student Information Assistant, Ms. Hala Soliman at @email, or return completed copies with the self-addressed stamped envelope included in the mailing.

Information concerning Opt-Out rights for Family Life and Education (FLE) will be included in the packet.    If you have any questions regarding Opt-Out procedures, please call the Administration at the school.  FLE materials will be available for you to review in the library at a later date.

The Student Rights & Responsibilities will be published online within the next couple of weeks.  After publishing, I will communicate a link so that you can acknowledge receipt of the document and understanding of the contents.

I implore your help by requesting that you join the Cedar Lane PTSA. This organization helps our school provide the quality educational activities that your student deserves. Your support is CRUCIAL to our mission of helping to provide the school with the resources it needs to help each child be successful!  You can help in 2 ways:

1) Donate to our No-Fuss Fundraiser through PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/supportCLPTSA or through Venmo @Cedar-Lane-1

Checks are also welcome and can be made out to Cedar Lane PTSA and mailed to the school at 101 Cedar Lane, SW, Vienna VA 22180.

Your generosity is very much appreciated as we navigate this new territory together- we could not do all that we do without YOU!
